Asturias is on Spain’s northern Atlantic coast in between France and Portugal. It is a largely unknown area of Spain to the outsider but is regularly visited by the wealthy people of Madrid who in many cases, have their holiday homes here. It is a mountainous region with the Picos de Europa at its heart, still the home to wild bears and wolves. The mountains hold snow in some years from November through to May.

On Spain’s northern coast, named the Costa Verde, which translates literally as Green Coast, and in the principality of Asturias, an area overlooked by the mass market tourist industry, thank goodness!

We are set at the 8km mark on the A267 (formerly A113) in the hamlet of San Pedro de Ambas, a stones throw from a world heritage site of the Monastery at San Salvador de Valdedios. Directly behind the property runs the famous Camino de Santiago, still walked today by pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela on the far western coast of Galicia, the final resting place of Saint James.
